How did you get into filmmaking?
After I watched the Powell Peralta skate video, I was super hyped up to go ride my bike. I wanted to make BMX videos that had the same effect. So I just started with two VCRs and home video camera and started making videos. It kept progressing ever since then and I’m still progressing today.

Did you get any formal training in film?

Yes, I studied film at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and then I went to graduate school at American Film Institute in Los Angeles.

What types productions have you worked on?

I’ve worked on a lot of non-action sports productions editing for Warner Bros., E! Entertainment, and ABC Family. As far as action sports are concerned, I make Diversion Video Magazine. It’s a series that represents the global flatland BMX Community. I’ve also shot some skate footage for the Cuatro Network.

Why did you start Diversion TV?
I wanted to be able get my videos distributed to a worldwide audience. I’ve met a lot of people in various countries that don’t have action sports DVD distributors in their area. Even if they do have DVD distributors they usually must pay an inflated price for the video after import taxes and shipping. Also, there were also many times I wanted to see old videos, but they don’t usually have a BMX or Skate video section at the rental store.
Diversion TV is the solution to get video out there much faster and cheaper than a DVD.

What role do you feel the internet plays in filmmaking?

Well, the internet isn’t going to go away. It’s only going to get faster and more accessible to more people. Computers are getting more powerful and cheaper. I think that filmmakers should use the internet as a tool to get their message out to more people.
I think the music industry tried to fight the internet and lost. Now, high quality video is the next frontier on the internet. We can’t afford to make the same mistake. Especially as independent filmmakers, we need to make use of the internet before it uses us.

What do you think is in the future for filmmaking?

Well, I heard Bill Gates lecturing about the future of technology and he noted that the DVD is the last battle for a physical format. So, the future starts now.  This is the beginning of DVD quality video being delivered without a disc.

Is there anything else you want to say?
My dream has been to travel the world and make videos that motivate people to take action doing the things they enjoy. I grew up watching skate, surf, snowboarding, BMX and other action sports videos. So thanks to all the action sports filmmakers out there that influenced my life positively!
